Definition: A family of ubiquitously-expressed peroxidases that play a role in the reduction of a broad spectrum of PEROXIDES like HYDROGEN PEROXIDE; LIPID PEROXIDES and peroxinitrite. They are found in a wide range of organisms, such as BACTERIA; PLANTS; and MAMMALS. The enzyme requires the presence of a thiol-containing intermediate such as THIOREDOXIN as a reducing cofactor.
Examples Peroxiredoxin III; Peroxiredoxin VI
Other names Thioredoxin Dependent Peroxide Reductase 2; Thioredoxin Dependent Peroxide Reductase 1; Thiol Specific Antioxidant Protein; Hydroperoxide Reductase, Alkyl; Thioredoxin-Dependent Peroxide Reductase 2; Thioredoxin-Dependent Peroxide Reductase 1; Thioredoxin Peroxidase PMP20; Thioredoxin Peroxidase 2; Thioredoxin Peroxidase 1; Thioredoxin Peroxidase; Thiol-Specific Antioxidant Protein; Protector Protein (Mixed-Function Oxidase Systems); Peroxiredoxin-4; Peroxiredoxin V; Peroxiredoxin IV; Peroxiredoxin II; Peroxiredoxin I; Peroxiredoxin 5; Peroxiredoxin 4; Peroxiredoxin 2
