Petrous Bone

Definition: The dense rock-like part of temporal bone that contains the INNER EAR. Petrous bone is located at the base of the skull. Sometimes it is combined with the MASTOID PROCESS and called petromastoid part of temporal bone.  fractures: coordinate PETROUS BONE /inj (IM) + SKULL FRACTURES (IM); neoplasm: coordinate IM with SKULL NEOPLASMS (IM)    Other names Petrous Pyramid; Pyramids, Petrous; Pyramid, Petrous; Petrous Pyramids; Petrous Bones; Bones, Petrous; Bone, Petrous
